Oak Ridge, Tennessee, has a long and distinguished history in science and technology. It played an important part in the early Manhattan Project and has continued to play a role in the nation's scientific and intellectual life

Science and its burgeoning benefits to the material life of mankind has tended to increasingly dominate the world view. Brilliant successes of physical researches, beginning with those of Galileo, Newton and other early geniuses, were theologically grounded and motivated by religious ideals. Early reductionist achievements have been succeeded by profound mathematical understanding of the universe and its physical laws. The heady wine of this success has led many modern thinkers to the view that the deepest secrets of the universe will be found if only methods of the hard sciences are followed to their ultimate conclusions . Others think that life functions through irreducible complexities that cannot be explained by Darwinian concepts and are evidence of divine intervention in the functioning of the universe.

The Oak Ridge Forum on Religion and Science is founded to explore these and many other related ideas. We hope that the many talented theologians, scientists and scholars in the area will participate in an untrammelled exploration of ultimate questions about life, the Universe, ethics and the meaning of it all.
